Description
Prepare to be delighted by the irresistible crunch and bold, savory flavor of Bite-Sized Blooming Onions! These crispy, golden bites are the ultimate party appetizer or snack that will have your guests coming back for more.
Ingredients
- 2 large sweet onions
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon horseradish (optional)
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Start by peeling the onions and cutting them into bite-sized wedges or thick petals. Carefully separate the layers and set them aside, ready for the coating process.
2. In one bowl, whisk together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and salt. In another bowl, pour the buttermilk. In a third bowl, add the panko breadcrumbs.
3. Dip each onion piece into the flour mixture, then into the buttermilk, and finally into the panko breadcrumbs. Press gently to ensure the coating sticks to the onions.
4. In a deep pot or fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
5. Carefully add the coated onion pieces to the hot oil in small batches. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove the onions with a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels.
6. While the Bite-Sized Blooming Onions are frying, you can prepare a delectable dipping sauce to accompany them. In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, horseradish (if using), smoked paprika, garlic powder, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
Notes
Freshly fried Bite-Sized Blooming Onions are best enjoyed immediately for maximum crispness and flavor. If you have any leftovers, they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, but they may lose some of their crunch over time.
