  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 4 cups water
  • ¼ cup baking soda
  • Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling

Instructions

  • Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk, active dry yeast, and sugar. Stir gently to dissolve and let it sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy.
  • Mix the Dough: Add flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms, then knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Let the Dough Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Make the Cheese Filling: Roll out the dough into a rectangle on a floured surface. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the dough, then roll it up tightly and pinch the edges to seal the cheese inside.
  • Shape the Pretzel Bites: Cut the dough roll into 1-inch pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Boil the Pretzels: In a large pot, bring the water and baking soda to a boil. Drop the dough balls into the boiling water, a few at a time, for 30 seconds each. Remove with a slotted spoon and place them back onto the baking sheet.
  • Bake: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the pretzel bites for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed up.
  • Top with Sea Salt: As soon as the pretzel bites come out of the oven, sprinkle them with coarse sea salt for extra flavor.
