Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 4 cups water
- ¼ cup baking soda
- Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk, active dry yeast, and sugar. Stir gently to dissolve and let it sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy.
- Mix the Dough: Add flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms, then knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Let the Dough Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Make the Cheese Filling: Roll out the dough into a rectangle on a floured surface. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the dough, then roll it up tightly and pinch the edges to seal the cheese inside.
- Shape the Pretzel Bites: Cut the dough roll into 1-inch pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Boil the Pretzels: In a large pot, bring the water and baking soda to a boil. Drop the dough balls into the boiling water, a few at a time, for 30 seconds each. Remove with a slotted spoon and place them back onto the baking sheet.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the pretzel bites for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed up.
- Top with Sea Salt: As soon as the pretzel bites come out of the oven, sprinkle them with coarse sea salt for extra flavor.
- Serve: Serve these Cheesy Pretzel Bites warm and enjoy the cheesy, chewy goodness!
Notes
- You can experiment with different types of cheese such as mozzarella or a mix of cheeses for a different flavor.
- For a crispy exterior, be sure to boil the pretzel bites in the baking soda water for the full 30 seconds.
- To keep pretzel bites warm for longer, store them in a bread box or warm them in the oven at a low temperature before serving.
