Description

Liver and Onions with Bacon is a rich and savory Southern classic that brings together tender beef liver, crispy turkey bacon, and sweet caramelized onions. This hearty comfort dish is full of flavor and is perfect for a cozy dinner!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb beef liver, sliced
  • 4 slices turkey bacon, chopped
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup milk (for soaking)
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  • Soak the Liver: Place the sliced liver in a bowl and cover with milk. Let it soak for 30-60 minutes to reduce bitterness. Drain and pat dry.
  • Prepare the Bacon and Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the turkey bacon until crispy. Remove and set aside. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  • Coat the Liver: In a shallow dish, mix flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Dredge each liver slice in the flour mixture, shaking off excess.
  • Cook the Liver: In the same skillet, melt butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add liver slices and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, until browned but slightly pink inside.
  • Combine and Serve: Return the onions and turkey bacon to the skillet, mixing them with the liver. Let it cook for another minute to blend the flavors.
  • Serve hot and enjoy this comforting Southern dish!

Notes

  • For a milder flavor, soak the liver in milk for an hour to reduce its strong taste.
  • You can swap turkey bacon with regular bacon if you prefer a richer flavor.
  • Be sure not to overcook the liver to keep it tender.
