Description

Salisbury steak with rich brown gravy is a comforting, savory dish that is easy to make and perfect for family dinners. Ground beef patties are browned, then topped with a flavorful, thick gravy made with beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, making this classic meal an irresistible choice for any night of the week.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (for frying)

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meat Mixture: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, finely chopped onion, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until evenly combined.
  2. Form the Steaks: Divide the mixture into 4 portions and shape each into a patty, about 1 inch thick.
  3. Cook the Salisbury Steaks: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add patties and cook for 4-5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  4. Make the Brown Gravy: In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onion and sauté for 5 minutes. Sprinkle flour over the onions, stir to form a roux. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 5-7 minutes, until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Combine and Serve: Return the cooked steaks to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and simmer for 5 minutes.
  6. Serve: Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite sides.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of thyme or rosemary to the gravy.
  • If you want a thicker gravy, increase the flour by 1/2 tablespoon.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat gently before serving.
