Description

Shrimp Dirty Rice is a beloved Southern classic, combining flavorful sausage, tender shrimp, and hearty rice into a comforting one-pot meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb hamburger meat
  • 1 lb ground pork sausage
  • 10–12 shrimp, tail off and deveined
  • 4 cups cooked rice (preferably day-old)
  • 2 cups broth (Better Than Bouillon chicken recommended)
  • 1.5 cups mixed onions and bell peppers, chopped
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil, divided
  • 1 tsp seafood seasoning
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 tbsp oregano
  • 3 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper, more to taste
  • 1/2 tsp salt, more to taste
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper

Instructions

1. Start by tossing the shrimp with the seafood seasoning. In a large skillet, heat 1 tbsp of vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the seasoned shrimp and cook until they’re pink and cooked through, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove the shrimp from the pan and set them aside.

2. In the same skillet, add the remaining 2 tbsp of vegetable oil. Brown the hamburger meat and sausage over medium heat until they’re fully cooked. Drain any excess grease if needed.

3. Add the chopped onions and bell peppers to the skillet. Sauté for 3-4 minutes, or until the vegetables have softened. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.

4. Sprinkle the flour over the vegetable mixture and stir constantly for 1-2 minutes to coat everything and lightly brown the flour, creating a roux.

5. Stir in the oregano, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, salt, pepper, and a pinch of cayenne. Cook for 1 more minute to bloom the spices and allow the flavors to meld.

6. Pour in the broth and stir well to deglaze the pan, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom. Let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes to thicken slightly.

7. Add the cooked rice and shrimp back to the skillet. Gently mix everything together until the rice is heated through, about 2-3 more minutes.

8. Taste the Shrimp Dirty Rice and adjust the seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed. Serve hot, garnished with chopped parsley or green onions if desired.

Notes

To ensure your Shrimp Dirty Rice turns out perfectly every time, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

– Avoid overcooking the shrimp – they should be just opaque and slightly curled when done.

– Take the time to properly make a roux for a rich, velvety texture.

– Adjust the spice levels to suit your personal preferences.

– Serve Shrimp Dirty Rice with crusty bread, a fresh salad, or sautéed greens for a complete meal.
